For the penny-pincher

Laifen Swift SE High-Speed Hair Dryer

A sunny forecast for tight budgets.

The SE is the entry model in Laifen's high-speed line. It has a 105,000 RPM brushless motor, 1,400 W of rated power and weighs about 0.89 lb without the cord. It checks air temperature 50 times per second and offers hot, warm and cold settings, with a long press for automatic cycling between hot and cold air. The maker lists a magnetic smooth nozzle and a diffuser in the box, so check the listing for the color you pick.

The trade-offs are real. Heat control is less fine than on the Swift, and one reviewer found the SE runs hotter than the Swift and that its diffuser gets very hot. It is a 120 V dryer, so it stays home or goes on domestic trips. For a first high-speed dryer, or a gift where the budget matters, it is the one I would start with.

What's good

  • 105,000 RPM brushless motor at the entry level
  • Light at 0.89 lb without the cord
  • Smooth nozzle and diffuser listed in the box

Watch out for

  • Checks heat 50 times per second against the Swift's 100
  • One reviewer found the diffuser gets very hot
  • 120 V only, so not for international travel

For the perfectionist

Laifen Swift High-Speed Hair Dryer

Steady temperatures, no heat waves.

The Swift has a 110,000 RPM brushless motor, 22 m/s airflow and 1,400 W of rated power. Laifen says it checks and adjusts temperature 100 times per second, double the SE, and one reviewer who measured both found the Swift's medium and high settings ran cooler than the SE's. The housing is nylon with glass fiber, and the maker rates the motor for up to 1,000 hours.

Reviews also show clear limits. The box has a smooth nozzle only; a diffuser and concentrator come with the Swift Special. TechRadar measured about 79 dB against a 59 dB claim for the Swift line, and there is no separate cool-shot button. Against a Dyson, TechRadar recorded just under seven minutes to dry with the Laifen and about four and a half with the Supersonic. If you care about precise heat and a light hand, the Swift is the sensible step up from the SE.

What's good

  • 110,000 RPM motor, with temperature checked 100 times per second
  • Medium and high settings ran cooler than the SE in one comparison
  • Nylon and glass-fiber housing, motor rated for 1,000 hours

Watch out for

  • Smooth nozzle only in the box; the diffuser needs the Special
  • Measured louder than the 59 dB claim
  • No separate cool-shot button

For the high-roller

Dyson Supersonic Nural Hair Dryer

Sunny with a chance of splurge.

The Nural is Dyson's current Supersonic. It has 1,600 W of power, four heat settings, three airflow settings and a cool shot button. In Scalp Protect mode a time-of-flight sensor measures the distance from your head and adjusts to hold a target temperature, and Pause Detect cuts heat and airflow when you set the dryer down. TechRadar recorded the standard Supersonic drying in about four and a half minutes against just under seven for the Laifen, and Today.com's reviewer picked the Dyson overall for performance and versatility over a Laifen.

The extras come with friction. Tom's Guide found Scalp Protect has a learning curve, because flipping hair in front of your face can make the dryer think it is too close, and the reviewer saw no noticeable scalp benefit over a few weeks. Attachments vary by bundle, so check what is in the box. At 1.8 lb it is also twice the weight of the Laifens. If the budget allows it and you want the most refined dryer in this group, it is my pick.

What's good

  • Sensor holds heat steady near the scalp
  • Dried faster than a Laifen in head-to-head reviews
  • Pause Detect cuts heat when set down

Watch out for

  • Priciest of the three by a wide margin
  • Scalp Protect has a learning curve
  • 1.8 lb, twice the weight of the Laifens

How I picked these

I started with the high-speed dryers most visible on Amazon US as gift season begins, then read each listing, the maker's specs and independent reviews. I haven't used these dryers myself. The picks rest on stated specs, reviewers' measurements, heat control and recurring patterns in buyer feedback.

  • Drying speed against price
  • Heat control and how hot it runs
  • Weight and wrist fatigue
  • Noise
  • Attachments in the box
  • Voltage and travel use

Questions people ask

Are high-speed hair dryers worth it?

They dry faster by moving more air through a small brushless motor, and they weigh less than most conventional dryers. In one head-to-head, TechRadar recorded about four and a half minutes with a Dyson and just under seven with a Laifen. Whether the time saved is worth the price depends on how long and thick your hair is and how often you dry it.

Is a Laifen a good Dyson alternative?

Reviewers describe the Laifen Swift line as fast and light, with results close to the Dyson Supersonic. The Dyson dried faster in TechRadar's comparison and has more heat and airflow settings, a cool shot button and more attachment options. The Laifen is louder than its claim and ships with fewer nozzles.

Do high-speed hair dryers damage hair less?

Heat damage depends on temperature and time. A dryer that dries faster and holds its temperature steady can mean less time under heat. The makers claim their heat control protects hair, but the independent reviews I read do not prove it. Keep the dryer moving, use a lower heat setting on damp hair and hold it away from your scalp.

Can I use a high-speed hair dryer abroad?

Check the voltage label first. Laifen says the SE is rated for 120 V and is not dual voltage. Plugging a 120 V dryer into a 230 V outlet can destroy it and creates a fire and shock risk. A plug adapter only changes the plug shape. Buy a model rated for the local voltage, or use the hotel dryer.

How do I clean the filter on a hair dryer?

Unplug the dryer and let it cool. Most high-speed dryers have a removable filter or intake cover. Follow the manual, clear the lint with a dry brush or rinse as the maker directs, and let it dry completely before you put it back. A clogged filter makes the dryer run hotter and work harder.
