Rice cookers for every kind of kitchen

Fall brings rice, congee and one-pot dinners back to the weeknight rotation. I compared the popular rice cookers on Amazon and kept three, each for a different kind of cook.

For the penny-pincher

AROMA Digital Rice Cooker and Food Steamer, 8-Cup Cooked, ARC-914SBD

Light showers on the budget.

This is a plain, proven design. You get a white rice button, a brown rice button, a steam setting, automatic keep-warm and a delay timer you can set up to 15 hours ahead. A steam tray, measuring cup and spatula come in the box.

The trade-off is control. There are no sushi, softer or harder settings, and Aroma backs it with a one-year limited warranty. If you cook rice a few times a week and want it done without thinking, that is enough. If you are picky about texture, look at the other two.

What's good

  • White, brown and steam buttons
  • Steam tray included
  • Delay timer of up to 15 hours

Watch out for

  • Only two rice settings, with no texture or grain-specific options
  • One-year limited warranty
  • Nonstick pot that will wear with use

2 to 8 cups cooked

For the small space

Zojirushi Micom Rice Cooker and Warmer, 3 Cups, NS-LGC05XB

Small front, clear skies.

Zojirushi lists this at 9-1/8 x 11-7/8 x 7-1/2 inches with a built-in retractable cord. That is a small footprint for a cooker with real menu settings: white, sushi, brown, GABA brown, long grain, steel cut oatmeal and quick cooking.

The limit is capacity. It makes up to 3 cups of uncooked rice, measured with Zojirushi's own cup. That suits a single person, a couple or a dorm. A family dinner or a meal-prep Sunday means two batches or a bigger cooker.

What's good

  • Compact footprint and retractable cord
  • Seven menu settings, including sushi, long grain and steel cut oatmeal
  • Micom control with automatic keep-warm and reheating

Watch out for

  • Tops out at 3 cups of uncooked rice
  • Nonstick-coated pan that will wear, with a replacement sold separately
  • Fewer menu options than the Neuro Fuzzy model

3 cups uncooked (0.54 L)

For the perfectionist

Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker and Warmer, 5.5 Cups, NS-ZCC10

Clear skies, every batch.

If you care how the rice turns out, this is where the control is. Zojirushi's menu covers white rice in regular, sushi, softer and harder styles, plus mixed, porridge, sweet, semi-brown, brown, rinse-free and quick cooking. Neuro Fuzzy is Zojirushi's name for a microcomputer that adapts heat as it cooks.

It is also the largest and the priciest of the three. It makes up to 5.5 cups of uncooked rice, runs at 680 watts and needs about 13 inches of counter depth. For a household that eats rice most days, that is a fair trade. For occasional use it is more cooker than you need.

What's good

  • Softer and harder white rice settings
  • Ten-plus menu options, including porridge and rinse-free
  • 5.5-cup capacity, made in Japan

Watch out for

  • Biggest footprint of the three, about 13 inches deep
  • Priciest of the three, and replacement pans cost extra
  • No steam tray listed
Capacity
5.5 cups uncooked (1.0 L)

Neuro Fuzzy (microcomputer)

How I picked these

I started with the rice cookers most visible on Amazon US this month and read each listing, the maker's specs and recurring patterns in buyer feedback. I haven't used these cookers myself. The picks rest on stated specs, menu settings, footprint and warranty terms.

  • Capacity against household size
  • Cooking control and menu settings
  • Footprint and cord
  • Inner pan care and replacement
  • Keep-warm and reheating
  • Warranty

Questions people ask

How much water should I add to a rice cooker?

Use the water lines marked inside the inner pan, matched to the rice type you chose. Rice cooker cups are not US cups. Zojirushi, for example, measures capacity with a 6.1 fl oz cup, and a US cup is 8 fl oz. Fill rice with the cooker's own cup and follow its lines.

Is it safe to leave rice on keep-warm?

Keep-warm is for the meal, not for storage. Rice dries and yellows the longer it sits, so check your manual for the maker's limit. Food safety guidance says to refrigerate leftover rice within two hours of cooking, eat it within three to four days and reheat it to 165°F. Don't leave cooked rice at room temperature.

What is the difference between a basic rice cooker and a fuzzy logic one?

A basic cooker runs a single heat cycle until the pot is dry. Micom cookers use a microcomputer to adjust time and temperature through stages, and Zojirushi's Neuro Fuzzy line adds more adaptive control. The practical gain is more consistent texture and more menu choices, such as softer or harder rice.

What size rice cooker do I need?

Rice roughly doubles in volume when cooked, so a 3-cup uncooked cooker yields about 6 cups cooked. Aroma lists the ARC-914SBD as 2 to 8 cups cooked. Check whether a listing uses cooked or uncooked cups before comparing sizes.

Can a rice cooker make anything besides rice?

Yes. The Aroma has a steam tray for vegetables and fish. The Zojirushi NS-LGC05 has a steel cut oatmeal setting, and the NS-ZCC10 has a porridge setting. Follow each maker's guidance for water amounts and fill levels.
